72. The Day Off
A young girl has a whole day of activities planned for her only day off, but then finds out she has to work.

I wrote, directed, shot, and edited (on a flatbed) this 16mm short film for my Cinematography 1 final.
My first venture into directing children and shooting 16mm with only a scripty as crew. Original score composed by Cory Weaver.

This short was shot on Kodak 7266 Black and White Reversal Film with a Bolex H16 Reflex camera.

Anxiously awaiting. Too bad I'll have to wait 'til the morning.
  • Haha yeah I uploaded it at noon and after 3 hours, it just kinda stalled and froze and stopped...so I reuploaded it.... 6 hours ago (3PM) and it says about an hour in line until it converts. Ronco food dehydrator, set it and forget it...

This turned out quite nicely. The score fit quite well. I liked that the poison dealer was wearing a bandana. Celeste was clearly not all sugar and spice, considering the black market poison. A happy little piece.
  • hahaha black market dinosaur dealing...those naughty children. tsk tsk. :)

Squinty's Dino Delivery, how can we help you?
So worth the wait, I loved it
  • Hey whats up 100+ degree temperatures and hellish sun heat, obviously the most ideal conditions to shoot in right?

So is that gonna be us this summer with our quasi lemonade stand?

So many dinosaurs! This turned out well. Cute story too :)
  • Aww thanks Glenn. Yeah I don't think the story came out as clear as I had hoped but because of the circumstances, this is what I have to work with. The kids make up for it, they are adorable. I really appreciate your taking the time to watch this, means a lot to me. :-)

What a sweet movie! I always like your films and this one was done on a Bolex H16! wow I grew up with a Bolex and I think I sill have a old super 8 laying around. Thanks so much for posting this. I loved it. How did you get this converted to digital?
  • Thanks Roger, that really means a lot. I just recently purchased a 16mm Bolex a couple months ago and I'm pretty excited about shooting some stuff this summer in colour. My school does a telecine digital transfer, but as you can see, the quality is nothing short of mediocre, their projector has a crazy hot spot in the middle of the screen that you can notice in a lot of the shots. I plan on telecining it myself at home. What you do play the film on a 16mm projector and project it into a box with a mirror and then get a 24P camera and video another mirror where the image shows up...or you can eliminate that whole mirror business and project it on some white foamboard.

If you don't have access to a projector, you can take your 8mm and 16mm film to costco and they can do a digital transfer onto a DVD for like 20 bucks for 100ft of film, or something pretty cheap. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how the quality is, but I can't imagine it being too bad. I think they give you a DVD with some weird ass file type on it that you may need to get conversions for or just rip that sucker off of there and convert to an mov or Mpeg with a bunch of freeware out there.

But yeah you should take out the ol super 8 and give her a spin. I have a couple 8mm cameras as well that I want to make more use of.

Film is a beautiful thing my friend, a beautiful thing.
  • RogerB1 6 months ago
Film is Beautiful! I know what you did to convert to digital;I have done it myself just that way. Yes, the quality is not all that good. I started to make movies in 1954 and so have lots of movie film in the can. Bolex is GREAT !
  • I had a talk to my teacher today and I am going to get it telecined to film...so they can run two bolex at the same time and have my film transfered onto film....

    haha ridiculous.

  • RogerB1 6 months ago
That sounds so cool. Let me know how it turned out. thanks

    This is so good.

I see Cory did the music. It fit very well.
  • Yeah he was a real dream gem about it. He's pretty freakin cool. You are sooo good Mr. Niebauer.
  • I left Michigan almost a year ago but i can't seem to keep out of people that live there. haha.
  • Stephen Niebauer plus 6 months ago
    Hah! Cory's the man.

    Michigan is where it's at.

PS - I'm thinking about buying a camera soon, so videos might start showing up from me...
  • EEEk i'm excited....don't forget to "share" them with me when u do so i dont miss them.

Shoot i need to run a fundraiser or something and buy myself a new working video camera as well.
  •
  • Buck Flashroy plus 6 months ago
Haha, that's so good. I really like the music for it. You all did so well! Good stuff. Like others, I also liked the black market dealing of dinos.
  • Yeah the irony in it was that 1) she lied to her boss by saying she was "done" working because what was at stake was all this stuff she planned for the day. 2) that she spent the money on "secret" dinos which is silly because she delivers dinos for her job... 3) that she stole those from her work
    4) that she's BEEN stealing them for a while..

    Silly kids.

And thanks to the hellish heat and brightness of the sun....you can't see what's on the papers...but they are drawings of dinosaurs... Silly film and all its problems.

    haha

I'll slip you some black market goods...

Oh, that's so cool - if it wasn't for the modern cars, this could have been a 50's movie :)

So, what is the deal with you and those dinos?
  • what are you guys talking about..they had those cars and minute maid in the 50s.

    hahaha <3 thanks boys.
  • ahah you silly poopy i was being sarcastic. :-)

he prouction design wouldve been completely off too if it was intended for the 50s....her outfit and their hairstyles...

    i'm that picky...
    haha
  • hha you are adorable. :-)
  • I just realized that I didn't answer Rico's original question of

"What is the deal with you and those dinos?"

To answer that, those specific dinosaurs, nothing really, just mere props for my film that were purchased. But dinosaurs in general.

When I was around 4 years old, 1989, a year after The Land Before Time was released in theaters...and I watched it on Beta, and I had some weird post traumatic stress after Littlefoot's mother died in the film. Then shortly after I had an imaginary friend that was a green brontosaurus. I won't go into details in regards to that. But anyways I had an older sister (who as a year and a half older than me) who became my best friend and eventually replaced the imaginary friend. When I was 8, my sister passed away (a year after my best friend did as well) and I had all these pretty bad images and memories in my head for a while afterwards...but for some reason the idea of the imaginary dinosaur and the littlefoot mother death thing was some sort of safety reaffirmation that things are going to be okay, no matter how bad things get. The obsessions with dinosaurs died for a while when I was in high school, but when I moved away for college, it came back. It's weird. I'm really interested in paleontology as an interest, and not as something I'd pursue. But anyways, that's where the dino love came from. Plus they're pretty cool looking things.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] 6 months ago
Thanks for the lowdown on that Karen - a sad and uplifting story at the same time. And yeah, dinos are pretty cool looking, I'll give you that :)

Yay :) A 16mm short from Karen with Dino's no less! These kids are great, I think you did a great job directing them.

Ha ha - I love the skull & bones brown paper bag :D Seriously, that's really awesome, I'm gonna have to make one.

I love all the flickering light off the camera when she's in the field :) Was that a happy accident?

And I *love* the shot of the dino's playing infront of the sun. You are so creative Karen.

These credits are great too. I'm so happy this turned out so great :)
  • Aww thanks Mike you were a big support throughout the process. *big hugs*

Let's just have bags of poison skull thingys everywhere....for everything. hahaa

Flickering light is the magic of 16mm..and Reversal film..you won't get that glowy magic with Negative film. Haha. Part of the reason why it's so hard to shoot reversal, the latitude for error is itty bitty. Also the flickery dickery docks are achieved when i pull my eye away from the eye piece and the sun which was a hellish mastermind would go through the viewfinder and hit the light. Movie magic!

It looks a zillion times better on the projection, the digital transfer is poo pie....(compared to the actual film) but that is the limitation of internet presentation...and shitty telecine.

you are a dream gem fantastmigoric friend!
  • mike ambs plus 6 months ago
I think you should sell the skull bags :)

Ahh... yes, when you said pulling your eye away from the eye-piece I remember Olivier (one of the people who helped film Pedal) did that a lot. I can't wait to see that footage... I need to get it developed... like tomorrow.

Well, hopefully, one day soon, you'll get to show me your film on a projector :)
  • Did you shoot on 16mm, 8mm, or 35mm? If you get it processed on 16mm..and want to edit it..by hand....I have a splicer and such..and a projector! hehe
  • mike ambs plus 6 months ago
We shot on 16mm film - I might want to do that just for fun :) but I'm gonna get a HD transfer to cut into the film... I think :P

Great job. The picnic location was amazing.
  • Looks are deceiving my dear friend...when sharpy prickly spike grass comes up to your elbows and you are in an area infested with bugs and poison oak..it is not to magical...hahaha. Logistical nightmares can turn into pleasurable aesthetic delights <3
  •
  • Koffie 6 months ago
ive never seen anything that can compare to this!
great job, the music fits perfectly as well

maybe if you speed the movie up, you can even make a silent movie like in the old days, (dont know the english word for it) with these silly piano plays and text between shots
i think it could work for the first part of the film, the later part gets a little less text, the visuals tell the story
might solve the problem which you thought of, i found that as the only problem as well, but the story was good quite clear
  • oh man like buster keaton film...love it! Thank you for your very very sweet and thoughtful words. I had thought about intertitles but we had to be able to tell a whole coherent story based on visuals and editing pace. Thanks a lot koffie, cute avatar.

Karen Abad loved making great shorts

    Karen Abad is phenominal

    Karen Abad does love dinosaurs.

    Karen Abad is unstoppable

Karen Abad, Ok maybe she could be stopped, I've never actually met her, but one day, she will be a famous writer director like Spike Jonze with the power of Spielberg, and then she'll be unstoppable =0)

    Karen Abad is cool

    So is Justin Adams =0)
  • LOL this made me laugh.

    Justin Adams is hilarious

    Justin Adams is inspirational
Justin Adams has a huge heart

Justin Adams is so friendly and wonderful

Justin Adams is Justin Adams is not Sam Adams who is not John Adams.

I won't be famous you silly head, i won't let that happen...it's too awkward for me, I gotta keep a low real life profile and an irrelevant internet profile...hahah..

Um so when are we hanging out is a better question. haha

When are you going to let me film you and mike
  • mike ambs plus 6 months ago
Your plan of not becoming famous is going to be quickly foiled if you keep making such awesome videos ;)

And yea, Justin, when *are* you going to let Karen film you and me?

so many dinos!! I used to have a bunch of those. I don't know what happened to them...
  • I stole them all from you.

haha just kidding I would never deprive people of dino love.

For this, my best friend Joe (the sketchy dealer dude) bought out all the plastic dinos from the store. :-) Now no kids will be able to play with them...haha no I'm gonna give a bunch away to some kids.
  •
  • Loonachic plus 6 months ago
how did you get the kids to listen to you? was it hard? kids always go crazy on me!

    another great one karen!
  • The kids were really really incredible. Actually I'll have to hand it to them...I am really proud of them for putting up with the conditions because it was SOOOOOOOOOO hot, unbelievably hot, and then not only that, but it takes FOREVER to shoot film. Can't just push a button and record, gotta make a bazillion measurements before actually shooting. They are total troopers. Plus their mom was there for the first day of shooting (the stuff with the dino stand) so whenever they started getting bored and wandering off or tired, she would put them in check. My best friend, who was my only crew member, is also really really close to the kids, so he helped me wrangle them too. All in all they are pretty incredible kids and super super cute..!!!

    Thanks loona!

Nice! A minor detail, for me the contrast is too large, is that artistic choice or is that symptomatic for 16mm film?
  • Oh man I totally agree. We can blame the school's shitty transfer for that. I am going to try to telecine it myself. I don't know what they did but they totally blow out all the images. The original film version looks much better. :-) Thanks pasman.
  • w.pasman 6 months ago
Good to hear that the original is much better. Maybe they can adjust their apparatus for a second try. Maybe they don't even know how it is operated properly ;-)
  • hee hee. yeah, thank goodness what i had to present in class was the projected copy. Looks phenomenal compared to this garbage, but that's the thing...film is film...getting it put on video will make it look worse...just as making video look like film seems to make people think it will look better...haha..

i just love love love this. i feel like such a lazy, uncreative loser in your presence.

i can't wait to see you win an academy award someday. you are an amazing film maker.
  • The kids were really really quite amazing. I am so grateful to them and their parents. Haha yeah the dino bag and lunchbox and such are mine. You know what's a shame though, I don't have a dino kite, and I've been looking for one for a while...but I got one for my birthday from my best friend! But it was too late, I had already shot this film. But i like Archimedes the Owl Kite, he's a cute little guy.
